The Commissioner’s Office of the State Corporation Commission (SCC) is offering a legal internship for summer 2022. The SCC’s Commissioner’s Office (COM) looks to fill one paid ($18/hour) internship under Judge Jehmal Hudson that will offer the opportunity to gain experience in the legal regulatory sphere through experiential learning.  

About the SCC

The SCC is a state agency located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. The SCC has regulatory authority over many business and economic interests in Virginia. The SCC strives to create a balanced playing field not only for consumers, but for companies as well. Internship Job Description

• Performing legal research and preparing reports 
• Drafting memoranda, orders, and other legal documents
• Attending evidentiary hearings
• Completing a writing project in preparation for submission to bar association competitions 
• Partaking in experiential learning processes in administrative and regulatory law
• Engaging with and learning from Judge Hudson about leadership practices and regulatory law
• Performing various operational and administrative tasks in support of Judge Hudson 

Preferred Qualifications 

• Continuing law school student (1L or 2L)
• Anticipated graduation dates between May 2023 and May 2024 are preferred, but not required
• Ability to work approximately 24 - 40 hours per week from May through August 2022
• Internet connection for completing some work remotely
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills, a professional demeanor, and strong attention to detail
• Ability to conduct legal research 
• Demonstrated interest in environmental and/or administrative law  
• Ideal candidates will be interested in a future career as an attorney with the Commonwealth, as a judge, or working within the regulatory industry or with a utility company
