Delaware state and federal courts have long been considered among the elite tribunals in the United States for the resolution of complex business disputes. Delaware’s Superior Court and its Complex Commercial Litigation Division (“CCLD”) – considered the complimentary business court of law to Delaware’s famed Court of Chancery – and the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware are eagerly followed by jurists, business lawyers, and investors around the country as the arbiters of cutting-edge jurisprudence and adjudicators of often “bet-the-company” litigation. It is no secret that a predominance of public and private companies find their home in Delaware where, when the stakes are high, they have ready access to some of the most preeminent and sophisticated business courts in the United States.

The Delaware State Bar Association invites you to apply for its Judicial Diversity Clerkship program. In order to apply for this program, sponsored by the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee, applicants must meet the following criteria: (1) be currently enrolled as a second-year student in good standing at an ABA accredited law school J.D. program; (2) be a minority group member (students of color, women, students with disabilities, or LGBTQ+ students) or have overcome a social or economic disadvantage such as a physical disability, financial constraints, or cultural impediments to becoming a law student; and (3) have an interest in bankruptcy law, civil litigation, or business litigation.

Law students selected to participate in the program will receive a clerkship (subject to the Court’s background check) with either a Bankruptcy Court or a Superior Court judge (one in general civil rotation and one in the CCLD) in Wilmington, Delaware, and a stipend of $6,000 for the seven-week (June 7 to July 30, 2021) clerkship.

Clerks will have the opportunity to meet and network with other members of the Delaware legal community.

Applications are to be submitted to clerkship@DSBA.org. All application materials, including letters of recommendation, must be received no later than April 5, 2021. Zoom interviews of selected candidates will be conducted in April and the selected clerks will be notified the week of May 3, 2021.

The application consists of six primary parts:

  •   Completed 2021 Application

  •   Resume

  •   Official undergraduate and law school transcripts

  •   Two Letters of Recommendation (at least one must be from a law school

    professor)

  •   Application Essay

  •   Writing Sample from Law School
