Position Title: Appellate Judge for the Havasupai Tribe

Brief Description: The Appellate Judge presides over appeal cases for the Havasupai Court of Appeals. This position requires an individual to review appellate briefs, motions and other pleadings and render decisions under Havasupai Laws. The Appellate Judge must have the ability to remain unbiased and ensure the fair and impartial administration of justice in the Havasupai Courts.

Location: Supai, Arizona

Main Duties:

  • Review appellate briefs, motions and other pleadings and render decisions according to the Havasupai Constitution, Law and Order Code, rules, procedures, tribal traditions, and customs (collectively “Havasupai Law”).

  • To the extent Havasupai Law does not address a particular issues before the Court, the Appellate Judge must also be able to assess and analyze other Federal, State or Tribal Law to render a decision that is compatible with Havasupai Law.

  • Preside over oral arguments and be able to elicit pertinent information from all parties during oral argument proceedings.

  • Provide reports to Tribal Council on Court of Appeals statistics.

  • Other duties as may be assigned by the Tribal Council.
