Position Title: ABA | South Texas Pro Bono Asylum Representation Project: Summer Internships
Position Description: The South Texas Pro Bono Asylum Representation Project (ProBAR) empowers immigrants through high-quality legal education, representation, and connections to services. ProBAR serves immigrants in the Rio Grande Valley border region with a particular focus on the legal needs of adults and unaccompanied children in federal custody.
ProBAR Adult Team Internship:
Adult Team interns will assist attorneys and paralegals with providing legal information and assistance to indigent adults in area detention facilities. Interns will conduct intakes and provide pro se assistance to detainees, either individually or as part of a workshop. Interns may participate in providing direct representation to an individual appearing before the immigration court, as well as complete memos, briefs, or other legal documents. Interns may also have the opportunity to work on immigration cases impacting individuals in the local community.
Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in non-profit or social justice work. Experience working with immigrants or detained people is a plus. Spanish proficiency is strongly preferred.
ProBAR Children’s Team Internship:
Children’s Team interns will support attorneys and work on cases involving direct representation of primarily Central American unaccompanied children detained in Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) shelters in South Texas. Interns may also have the opportunity to work on immigration cases impacting others in the local community.
Interns will develop direct representation expertise through meeting with clients and have opportunities to observe Immigration Court proceedings. Interns may also have the opportunity to appear as law students before the Harlingen Immigration Court. The most common types of immigration relief we seek on behalf of children include Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), asylum, T visas, and U Visas.
These positions are full-time and 10 weeks in duration, with flexible start and end dates. Proficiency in Spanish is required, as is being enrolled in (or a graduate of) a Juris Doctor or LL.M. program. Applicants should have excellent communication skills; experience working with children is a plus.
